Synopsis
A teenager from a small, rural town on the high plains of Texas improbably gains a summer job in Washington D.C. This memoir relates his story of people outside his family taking an interest in preparing him for such an endeavor and his coming of age in the presence of powerful people and institutions. Subsequent books in the series cover the author’s experiences as a horse wrangler at an exclusive all-girls summer camp high in the Colorado Rockies, driving to Alaska with a life-long friend to work and experience the rough and tumble world of Anchorage and the northern frontier, and in the final book, graduating college, beginning law school, being drafted into the military, and spending a hitch in the U.S. Marine Corps.
